Description of the attraction

The military-historical complex "Mikhailovskaya Battery" is located on the coast of the Sevastopol Bay, on the northern side. Today it is a branch of the National Military History Museum of Ukraine. The fort miraculously survived two defenses of Sevastopol without significant destruction, now a museum is open here.

The Mikhailovskaya battery was built in 1843, according to the design of the engineer-colonel K. I. Bruno. The construction manager was another colonel engineer, future lieutenant general Pavlovsky. The battery was erected on the site of old earth fortifications that protected the bay of Sevastopol from enemy attacks from the sea. The fort is U-shaped, its length is 205 meters. The walls are up to 1.8 meters thick. In addition, to protect the rear, a ditch was dug and a protective wall was built (it has not survived to this day). During the Second World War, the fort was repeatedly shelled. The Mikhailovskaya battery was saved from complete destruction by the fact that there was a hospital in its premises. To be more precise, because of the hospital in the basements it was not allowed to equip stores of gunpowder, which could level the fort to the ground when hit by a shell.

During the Soviet Union, the Mikhailovskaya Battery was reconstructed, the "Heroic Sevastopol" exposition was opened, which occupies twenty-one exhibition halls on the second tier. About 10 thousand exhibits are exhibited here, which were part of the private collection of the Sheremetyev family. On the territory of the museum, you can see an exhibition of various weapons - from knives to machine guns, ship cannons, military uniforms from different times, letters, books and documents.
