Once upon a time, Keto-speaking peoples lived here, which completely disappeared by the 18th century. The date of foundation of the settlement is called 1628, although some finds from archaeological excavations on the territory of the city belong to the Paleolithic era. It all started with a small prison built by the Cossacks in August 1628. The erection of the fortress was necessary, since the local peoples refused to pay yasak to the Russians, and they made constant raids. Ostrog got the name Krasny Yar, since 1631 it became the center of the county. Later, a "big" prison was built, the settlement received the status of a city in 1690.

Residents of Krasnoyarsk, although geographically distant from the center, were always aware of events. For example, the 1905 revolution led to the creation of the Krasnoyarsk Republic in December this year.
