Uruguay is one of the states of South America. The rivers of Uruguay belong to the Atlantic Ocean basin.

Uruguay river

The river bed is a natural border between the two states. The name was given to it by the Indians, who were the very first to master its shores. The word is composed of two words - "uru" and "guay". If you give a literal translation from the language of the Tupi tribes, then "guay" is a river, and "uru" the Indians called all birds with bright plumage. And together it sounds like a "river of variegated birds."

The source of the river is the confluence of Kaonas and Pelotas in the Serra de Mar mountains. In its upper course, the river passes through the territory of Brazil, then forms (middle course) the natural border between Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay owns the entire lower course of the river.

San Salvador river

San Salvador is a left tributary of the Uruguay River. The source of the river is the Soriano department (near the town of Cardona) on the Cuchilla Grande Inferior hill.

The river bed passes through the most fertile soil in the country. Not far from the confluence of San Salvador with Uruguay is the city of Dolores. It is the second largest city in the department.

Quarai River

The river bed passes through the territory of two states - Brazil and Uruguay. Moreover, in Uruguay it is called Quareim.

The source of the river is in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul (its southern part). To be more precise, this is the Cuchilla Negra hill near the city of Santana do Livramento.

The riverbed is part of the border separating the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and the Uruguayan department of Artigas. The river flows into Uruguay near the town of Bella Union.

Santa Lucia river

The river belongs entirely to the Republic of Uruguay. The source of the river is located in the department of Lavalleja (near the city of Minas). The Santa Lucia bed is the border between the following departments: Florida - Canelonas; Canelonas - San Jose; San Jose - Montevideo (at the mouth of the river).

Santa Lucia flows into La Plata near the Delta del Tigre, forming a small delta. The total length of the river channel is 230 kilometers. The main tributaries of the river are San Jose and Chico. In addition to them, the waters of Santa Lucia receive another 200 small rivers.

Sebolyati river

The river belongs entirely to the country. The source of Sebollati is located on the Cuchilla Grande Upland (Levalleja department). The main tributary of the Sebolyati, the Olimar Grande River, flows into its waters downstream. The end point of the route is Lagoa Mirin Lake. It is Sebollati that is (for the most part of the current) the natural border dividing the departments of Treinta-i-Tres and Rocha.
