Macedonia is the southern part of Yugoslavia that collapsed back in 1991, and not the birthplace of the great Alexander the Great, as many believe. A trip to Macedonia will introduce you to Lake Ohrid and offer you many great ski resorts.

Public transport

The most successful way to travel around the country is by bus. From the capital of the country, you can get to any city, and if you wish, go to the capitals of neighboring states. Places must be booked in advance, at least a day before the departure of the flight. Tickets can be bought at the box office. It is customary to enter the bus only through the back door, since it is in the tail of the passenger compartment that the conductor sits.

Transport of cities is represented exclusively by buses. In addition, parks are outdated almost everywhere.

Tickets are used to pay for travel, which can be bought at the newsstand. If necessary, you can buy a ticket from the bus driver, but it will be a little more expensive. There are also reusable tickets sold in tobacco pussies.

Taxi

It is the taxi that is in special demand among tourists. But the cost of travel must always be negotiated in advance. In general, the cost of the trip is made up of the payment for getting into the car plus the fee for each kilometer.

Air transport

The country's international airports are complexes located in Skopje (the capital of Macedonia) and Ohrid.

Railway transport

The country's railway communication is not too developed, but at the same time it works with full dedication. There are two main routes in the country:

  • Skopje - Gevgelia (with a passage through Gradsko and Titov Veles);
  • Skopje - Bitola (with a passage through Gradsko and Prilep).

Trains move very slowly but are more comfortable. Especially in the summer when the buses are overcrowded. But for tourist travel, the train is not the best choice. After all, all the main attractions of Macedonia are located very far from the railway tracks.

Car rental

Car rental services are available at both Skopje and Ohrid airports. To rent a car, it is enough to have an international driving license. Sometimes the company requires a deposit. The amount directly depends on the brand of the rented car. In addition, you will need to pay for insurance and local taxes.

Of course, traveling by car opens up many new possibilities. But you need to remember that only the main tracks are in good condition. Most of the local roads are in a very poor condition and require major repairs. In addition, information boards and signs are very often missing.

You will also need to comply with the speed limit:

  • on major highways - no more than 120 km / h;
  • on the highway - no more than 80 km / h;
  • on the territory of settlements - no more than 60 km / h.

Radars monitor compliance with the speed limit.
