The airport in Thessaloniki "Macedonia" is one of the main airports in Greece, it is located 15 kilometers southeast of the center of the resort, in the town of Kalamaria. The airline has two asphalt runways with a length of 2, 44 km and 2, 41 km, which allows it to receive aircraft of medium and small types.
Flights from Thessaloniki are made daily to European countries, CIS countries, including Russia. The structure of the airport includes passenger and cargo terminals. On its territory are deployed units of the Greek Air Force and the Thessaloniki aeroclub, which represents light aircraft.
History
The creation of the airport in Thessaloniki falls on the period of the Great Patriotic War, when the fascist invaders erected a 600-meter-long runway here. And only in 1948 the first civil flights began to be operated from Thessaloniki.
At the beginning of the 50s of the last century, an artificial runway with an asphalt surface with a length of 1.8 km was created, in the same year the first building of the air terminal in Thessaloniki with a flight control tower on the roof was built. By the end of the 50s, the runway was expanded and extended to 2.4 km.
In the fall of 1965, the terminal building was moved to the town of Kalamaria, where it is located to this day. Over the entire period of its existence, the passenger terminal has been significantly expanded, a large-scale reconstruction and technical re-equipment of the airport as a whole has been carried out, a new runway has been laid parallel to the existing one.
Today it is a modern airline that meets all the requirements of international standards, capable of accepting aircraft of all types with a takeoff weight of up to 170 tons.
Service and services
Despite its small area and congestion at the height of the tourist season, the airport has all the necessary conditions for a comfortable stay of passengers on its territory. A convenient navigation system has been provided that allows passengers to move around the airport on a mobile basis, voice and visual warning systems about the movement of aircraft, round-the-clock security of the airport.
For people with disabilities, a meeting and escort to their destination is organized. There are souvenir boutiques, internet cafes, ticket offices for air tickets. The only inconvenience is the lack of a luggage room.
Transport
There are regular buses and city taxis from the airport in Thessaloniki to the city, and transfers are also provided.
