Description of the attraction

Gargano is a historical and geographical area of the Italian region of Apulia, consisting of a vast isolated mountain range of several peaks that form the "ridge" of the Gargano Peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea. This peninsula is often called the "spur of the Italian boot". The highest peak is Monte Calvo - 1065 meters above sea level. Most of the peninsula is about 1200 sq. Km. - is part of the Gargano National Park, founded in 1991 in the province of Foggia.

The Gargano Peninsula is partially covered by a forest called the Foresta Umbra, the only surviving places in Europe where you can see the ancient oaks and beeches that were once found almost throughout the continent. The ecosystem of the Apennine deciduous forest is also located here.

The Gargano coastline is dotted with beaches. The small towns of Vieste, Peschici and Mattinata are world renowned seaside resorts. The two main salt lakes of the peninsula - Lesina and Varano - are located in its northern part. Mount Monte Gargano has long been considered one of the most visited places of pilgrimage - the oldest sanctuary of the Archangel Michael in Western Europe is located on it.

Today, tourism is flourishing on the Gargano Peninsula and the corresponding infrastructure with hotels, restaurants and campgrounds is actively developing. Marina di Lesina is especially popular. Gargano's attractions include the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ripalta, the Black Stones volcanic cliffs and the Temple of San Nazario. Every year in the towns and villages of the peninsula, a variety of events are held: for example, in May, the San Primiano regatta is held, and in August, San Rocco Day is celebrated.
