Description of the attraction
The Olympic Sports Museum was opened on March 21, 2007 after the project was approved by the Barcelona City Council in 2005. The museum is located on the Montjuic hill, in front of the Olympic Stadium.
The museum displays exhibitions that reveal the history of sports from the time of Ancient Greece, where the Olympic Games originated, to the present day. The expositions represent the themes of sports competitions, recreational sports, sports for the disabled. It demonstrates the importance of sport, its influence on the formation of a system of values, education, physical and cultural growth.
Each of the four halls of the museum reveals its own theme to which it is dedicated. The first hall shows important sporting events, moments dedicated to people who are significant in sport. The second hall opens the history of the Olympic Games held in Barcelona in 1992. The third hall is dedicated to sports records and outstanding victories. There are exhibits such as Miguel Induraín's bike, Angel Nieto and Alex Krivele motorcycles, Mickey Hakkinen's Formula 1 car and many others.
The fourth hall is dedicated to the time when the International Olympic Committee was headed by Juan Antonio Samaranch from Barcelona. Here are his belongings, as well as a large number of medals, torches, paintings, photographs, insignia, sports trophies, posters, publications and publications on sports topics. All this was presented to the Museum by Samaranch himself. In 2010, the Museum was renamed the Juan Anthony Samaranch Olympic Sports Museum. This man made a huge contribution to the development of the Olympic movement. For his outstanding achievements in the field of sports and contribution to the Olympic movement, the King of Spain awarded Samaranch the title of Marquis in 1991.
