The beginning of the aviation enterprise in Khanty-Mansiysk dates back to the end of 1934, when the polar pilot N. Tselibeev flew on an AIR-6 aircraft with a landing in Ostyako-Vogulsk (the former name of Khanty-Mansiysk), associated with preparatory work on the construction of routes along the Siberian rivers Ob and Irtysh. At that time, the settlement already had a small airfield that belonged to the Samarovsk airport of the Northern Sea Route State Administration.
A month after N. Tselibeyev's flight from Ostyako-Vogulsk, the first passenger flight was made on the Tyumen-Obdorsk route with a landing in Samarovo. And by the end of 1935, the air communication Tyumen-Ostyako-Vogulsk was established.
The airport in Khanty-Mansiysk received its current name in 1956, and in 1973 a new building of the air terminal complex was erected on the site where the airport is located today.
