Description of the attraction

The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, or, as it is also called the Yuzhno-Sakhalin Cathedral, is one of the iconic sights of the city. The temple consecrated in honor of the Resurrection of Christ is located on St. Innokenty Boulevard, which is located at the intersection of Komsomolskaya Street and Kommunistichesky Prospekt.

The site allotted for the construction of the cathedral was consecrated by Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev), who visited the city in August 1990. However, the construction of the temple began only in 1992, as funds for its construction were sorely lacking. The construction of the cathedral was completed in 1995. The authors of the project of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ were the architect S. Michenko and the designer L. Sivkova.

The small one-domed church was built in accordance with the traditions of the Old Russian architecture of the Novgorod school. A belfry tower was erected on the territory of the cathedral. The bell, specially cast for this tower, weighs one ton. On it you can see the image of St. Innocent of Moscow, who was also the enlightener of America and the Far East. In the cathedral itself there is a lower temple, which was consecrated in the name of the Resurrection of the Word.

Over time, it became clear that the cathedral, designed for 450 people, could not accommodate all the parishioners. Therefore, in 2002, its reconstruction began. On the east side, opposite the temple, a bell tower was built with an elegant dome, which was an octahedral tent crowned with a small helmet-shaped cupola.

The bell tower and the church were connected by a ceiling, thanks to which the church space was significantly expanded. As a result of the restoration, the building of the cathedral has changed its silhouette. Now the temple looks like a white ship with gentle blue sails.
