The name of the museum indicates that geography is a collection of a large number of interrelated sciences about the Earth and the earth's crust, about the human habitat in a geographical sense and about the environment of human activity. The basis of the exposition of the Museum of Geosciences was created from the exhibits of two offices of the Moscow State University, created in the 18th century. In 1949, the Academic Council of Moscow State University decided to create a unified interfaculty museum of geosciences. The organizers' concept was based on the interconnection of sciences: geographical, geological-mineralogical, soil and biological, while simultaneously showing the development of natural sciences at Moscow University. In 1950, the Academic Council developed the Museum's programs and organized expeditions to collect relevant materials. The entire main set of works was completed by 1955.
