Description of the attraction

One of the most famous and visited Orthodox churches in Limassol, Agia Napa Cathedral, located in the center of the city's respectable residential and commercial area, is a wonderful example of a mixture of several architectural styles, as well as Greek and Byzantine church traditions.

The history of the cathedral began in 1903. It was then that it was built according to the project of the Greek architect Papadakis on the site of an old Byzantine church, erected back in 1740. The large white building of the cathedral, standing right among the residential buildings, is immediately striking. From the outside, the temple looks quite simple and restrained, despite the abundance of small details - openwork gratings, narrow windows with colored glass, graceful stucco patterns and stone carvings. Two large quadrangular towers rise on either side of the entrance, and the roof is crowned with a neat dome. But inside this cathedral amazes visitors with its magnificent decoration and decoration - massive columns, high arches decorated with gilded stucco moldings, bright frescoes. One of the main values of the cathedral is the icon depicting Jesus Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles - it is completely hand-embroidered with silk threads and decorated with gold lace trim. Despite the fact that the icon was created not so long ago, it, as a real work of art, has already become quite famous.

But the most popular among believers and ordinary tourists, the Agia Napa Cathedral acquired thanks to the relics stored there - the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and the Belt of the Virgin.
