Description of the attraction

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the oldest churches in the city of Kerch. The church appeared in 1907 thanks to the efforts of A. V. Novikov, who donated his own land to the city for the construction of the temple.

The project of the temple was developed by the architect A. I. Karapetov. He planned to build a large stone church with wooden vaults in an open, elevated place. In early August 1905, a solemn consecration of the construction site took place. The temple was built with funds allocated from the city treasury, as well as donations from local residents. The construction work was supervised by a military engineer, Captain G. I. Lagorio.

Two years later, a beautiful snow-white temple resembling a ship in shape became a real decoration of the Old Quarantine. The church was crowned with five domes and had a modest interior with a carved wooden iconostasis. A spiral staircase led from the narthex to the bell tower.

The exact date of the consecration of the temple is unknown, it is assumed that the church was consecrated in the name of the Ascension of Christ on February 15, 1907. After the consecration, the temple was assigned to the Kerch Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

After the coming of Soviet power, the temple, like many other churches, was closed, after which all its church property was seized, and the building itself was transferred to the fishermen's club. During the first occupation of Kerch, the fascist invaders in 1941 set up a stable in the altar of the former church. In 1943 the parishioners put the church in order and consecrated it in memory of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

After the liberation of Kerch, the shrine was not closed, although the struggle for it continued. From 1946 to 1953, 11 priests were replaced in the Assumption Church. In May 1953, Priest Joasaph Kraplin was appointed rector of the temple, thanks to whom the revival of the temple began.

Today, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary pleases all residents of Kerch with its beauty. A Sunday school for children has been opened at the church.
