Description of the attraction

One of the important historical sites in the city of Helsingor (Elsinore) is the Kronborg Royal Palace, located on the coast of the Øresund Strait. The first construction of the castle was started by King Eric VII of Pomerania in 1420.

Eric Pomeransky was the first to levy a toll on the passage of the strait by foreign ships, forcing merchant ships to officially pay. It was for this that the king needed a powerful castle with cannons, good weapons and a large garrison. An important task of the Kronborg castle was also to resist the military threat from Sweden.

During the reign of Frederick II, the castle was rebuilt by the famous Dutch architect Hans van Peschen in 1574-1577. After his death, the palace was completed by the equally famous Dutch architect Anthony van Opbergen. The final finishing works were completed in 1785. The castle was built in the Renaissance style and in this form it has survived to this day.

The palace has been open to visitors since 1938. The interior of the palace is designed in the Renaissance and Baroque style. The ballroom, 62 meters long, attracts special attention of visitors; seven tapestries depicting kings are also an important detail of the interior. The catacombs under the palace and the basement where the statue of the Danish Hölger is located are open for public viewing.

Today, the royal residence of Kronborg serves for representative purposes or special occasions. The castle also houses the Danish Maritime Museum. It is impossible not to mention that this particular castle is the scene of the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare - Elsinore Castle.

Kronborg Palace is an important historical attraction in Denmark, and is visited by a large number of tourists from all over the world every year.
