One of the largest museums in Central Asia is the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan, located in the city of Almaty. The museum began its history in the 30s. It was then that the creation of his collections began.

In the nineteenth century. in the city of Orenburg, at the military school of I. Neplyuev, the "Museum of the Orenburg region" was founded. Later, in Almaty, the collections of the museums of the Semirechensk region, the Cossack army and the republican anti-religious committee were added to the museum funds. Since 1931, the institution was located in the former building of the Cathedral, erected in 1904-1907. according to the project developed by the famous architect A. Zenkov.

In 1985 the museum moved to a new, modern building. This is one of the best buildings in urban architecture. The total area of the museum building is over 17.5 thousand square meters. m. In the fund and exhibition collections of the museum, there are about 300 thousand items of storage of archaeological, historical and ethnographic nature. The museum has seven main exhibition halls.

The first hall includes archaeological and paleontological complexes. In the hall of "Historical Ethnography" items of traditional Kazakh life and culture are presented. It houses a rich collection of military armor of the 17th-19th centuries, weapons, various jewelry, carpet and felt products, Kazakh embroidery and even the nomadic dwelling of Kazakhs. The paleontological hall contains various artifacts, for example - unique fragments of petrified trees, remains with prints of various insects and fish, many osteological materials and much more.

In the third hall, entitled "Kazakhstan during the Great Patriotic War, the culture of the diasporas", there are exposition sections that reflect the history and culture of ethnic diasporas living on the territory of Kazakhstan. The fourth hall "Sovereign Kazakhstan" reflects the history of Kazakhstan, from 1991 to the present day. The fifth hall "Open Fund" is represented by previously unknown treasures of fund collections, where a special place is given to the collection of gold items. The sixth hall "Museum of Anthropology" is the only one in Central Asia - the exposition of this hall is devoted to the history of the formation of mankind. In the last, seventh room, there is a collection of N. Khludov, a Russian artist-painter, ethnographer, ethnographer, founder of the Semirechensk department of the Russian Geographical Society.

The Central State Museum of Kazakhstan is considered the most visited museum in the country.
