Description of the attraction

The building of the current town hall of St. Pölten was acquired by the city council and rebuilt in 1503. It is located in the central city square called the Town Hall. It houses the offices of the mayor, the city parliament and the council of the region of Lower Austria. In addition, several premises are occupied by city government services.

The first mention of the town hall of St. Pelten is found in a document from the beginning of the 16th century, which refers to the acquisition by the city of the house of the tradesman Thomas Pudmer. This building appeared on the main city square in the XIV century. Pudmer's house is currently the eastern wing of the Town Hall. The western half of the City Hall was a separate building. It was bought in 1567 and added to the existing Pudmer house. The two buildings are currently united by a common façade. The octagonal tower between the two buildings was built in 1519 and was originally used as a granary and arsenal. The onion dome appeared later - in the years 1750-1775.

The Town Hall acquired its current Baroque look in the first half of the 18th century. In 1727, the architect Josef Munngenast supervised the creation of the new façade of the City Hall. In the former meeting room, which has now been converted into the mayor's office, attention is drawn to the 1722 ceiling painting. The frescoes depict portraits of the emperors.

In subsequent years, the premises of the Town Hall were used for various purposes. For some time, the headquarters of the fire brigade was located here, then a library, a museum and even a prison were equipped here.

Recently, during renovations on the western wall of the town hall, sgraffito drawings from the end of the 14th century were discovered.
