Description of the attraction
Myeongdong Cathedral, whose full name is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located on Myeongdong Street. Myeongdong Street is considered the main shopping street of Seoul, and is home to major financial firms, shops and four large department stores.
This is the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Seoul. Archbishop of Seoul since 2012 - Korean Cardinal Andrey Yom Su Jun. Myeongdong Cathedral was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is considered the main patroness of the entire Korean people. In addition, the cathedral is a symbol of the Catholic faith in Korea, and also one of the earliest and most prominent examples of Neo-Gothic.
The original church building was built with red and gray bricks. The height of the temple reached 23 meters, and with a spire on which there was a clock, the height was 45 meters. In November 1977, Myeongdong Cathedral was listed as a National Historic Landmark at # 258.
Inside the church, attention is drawn to the stained glass windows, which depict the Birth of Jesus, Adoration of the Magi, Jesus and the 12 Apostles. In 1982, the restoration of the stained glass was carried out. The cathedral is also known for keeping the relics of the Korean martyrs who preached Christianity and died for their faith.
