Description of the attraction
Vlaska Church is a current church with an old cemetery located in the historical center of Cetinje. It was built in 1450. Officially, the temple bears the name of the Nativity of the Virgin. Because of the two names, confusion can arise, since in Cetinje there is a church called Vlaska, which stands on the Chipura hill. The second church belongs to the Cetinje monastery.
The Church received its name "Vlashka" from the peoples who once lived here - the Vlachs (or Vlachs), who were the Eastern Romanesque Orthodox population of the Balkans. Legends explain the name of the church by the fact that it was built in the middle of the 15th century by shepherds, because in Serbian “shepherds” is “vlasi”.
The way the church looks today is due to the renovations carried out since the middle of the 19th century. Nevertheless, the unique frescoes of the Greek school have survived to this day in the church.
The cemetery surrounding the temple has a fence made of 2,000 trophy guns obtained during the Montenegrin-Turkish wars. In 1939, a monument “Soul of Lovcen” was erected opposite the church. This monument was erected in honor of the Montenegrins who died in the shipwreck, who were returning from the United States to their homeland, wanting to help their compatriots in the First World War.
