Description of the attraction
The Church of All Saints appeared in the historic quarters of the Mexican capital at the corner of La Santisima and Emiliano Zapata streets in the 17th century. Due to insufficient care and several earthquakes, the temple fell into disrepair by the middle of the 18th century, so it had to be closed for reconstruction. It turned out that building a new church is much easier than renovating an old one. The construction of the new temple began in 1755 and lasted until 1783. At first, this temple was hospitalized, as it was part of the hospital of the Holy Trinity. The hospital functioned until 1859, when, according to the reform to transform the city, most of the church property was nationalized. The hospital was rebuilt, but the church was preserved. It is still active now.
The baroque three-aisled temple is somewhat reminiscent of the sacristy of the Mexico City Cathedral, so some researchers are sure that the same master, Lorenzo Rodriguez, worked on them. But, if you study the architectural works of Lorenzo Rodriguez, you will notice some common decorative details that are not in the Church of All Saints. Recently, archival records have been opened, which indicates the name of another architect who was involved in the project of the All Saints Church. It turned out to be the famous specialist Ildefonso Iniesta Bejarano.
The church looks very unusual due to its design. Its dome is decorated with the image of a Maltese cross, and the facades are decorated with stone reliefs, on which you can see 12 apostles, and 10 sculptures of church ministers. The main entrance is between two columns.
