Description of the attraction
Castel Flavon Castle is located high above Bolzano and its surroundings. The exterior of the building and its atmosphere are quite impressive.
The imposing castle complex was built in the 12th century by the lords of Haselberg. In those days, Castel Flavon was surrounded by a circular wall, which, however, could easily be taken by storm. Today, fragments of that wall can be seen in the southern and eastern parts of the castle. A residential complex was located behind the defensive line. Probably, the main tower of the castle was also built in the 12th century - this is evidenced by the finds made in its vicinity. Part of the system was a rainwater collection cistern, which was significantly rebuilt in the 13th and 15th centuries. And between 1474 and 1541, the entire castle was modified at the initiative of the lords of Fie - the results of that reconstruction are visible today. In the eastern wing of Castel Flavon, a hall with double arches was built, another large hall appeared in the northern part of the castle. A new defensive wall was also erected.
Today, Castel Flavon consists of three sections, which were decorated with frescoes after restoration work. True, the northern wing, which collapsed in 1880 and was only recently restored on a smaller scale, has preserved only fragments of wall paintings. The rooms of the castle are used today for seminars, conferences and celebrations. The unique old complex high above the rooftops of Bolzano is complemented by a luxurious restaurant.
