Description of the attraction
The Mammuthole Cave is located in the northern part of the Dachstein mountain range, which serves as a kind of border between the federal states of Styria and Upper Austria. The cave is located 55 kilometers from Salzburg. It is one of the largest and deepest in Austria and the thirtieth in terms of these indicators in the world.
The very name of the cave, literally translated as "mammoth cave" is associated with its enormous size. It was known in antiquity and was used as a refuge or even an underground storage. Only in 1910, scientific research of this unique object began, and almost immediately electricity was installed in the cave and corridors for tourist visits were cut.
Now the total length of the cave exceeds 60 kilometers, while more and more halls and tunnels continue to open. However, only a small part of it is open to visitors. During an hour-long tour of the cave, tourists will walk no more than a kilometer through the intricacies of its intricate corridors and secret passages.
First of all, visitors are given a short excursion about the origin of the cave and it is shown how for thousands of years the water has pierced the walls of the cave and solidified in the form of stalactites and stalagmites. Tourists are also invited to climb to the very top of the cave and look into the frightening abyss of its gorge. It is worth noting that the height differences in Mammutkhol are quite significant and reach 1200 meters. The highest point of the cave is 1368 meters above sea level.
Various festivals of light also take place in Mammutkhele Cave, during which vivid images appear in total darkness, the most outstanding of which is a detailed depiction of an artsy Gothic temple. Moreover, the excursion begins in the funicular itself, which takes tourists to the cave, as it presents the main milestones of the last half a billion years of the Earth's history. And fans of extreme sports are invited to go down on a special rope to the corners of the cave, which are closed from tourists. It is only necessary to note that it is rather cold in the cave, the average temperature does not exceed three degrees Celsius.
