Description of the attraction

Monument to P. S. Nakhimov was built in the center of Sevastopol on the square named after this famous admiral. The famous naval commander lived a short but bright life from 1802-1855, and left his mark on history.

Initially, the monument was erected on the 45th anniversary of the Battle of Sinop in 1898 on the square near the pier. The project of the monument was developed by Lieutenant General A. A. Birderling, and the artist - sculptor N. I. Shreder implemented it. The opening ceremony of the monument was attended by Nicholas II.

In 1928, in compliance with the Decree on the removal of monuments, the sculpture was destroyed, and in its place in 1932 a monument to V. I. Lenin was erected by the sculptor V. V. Kozlov. After the war, it was decided to renew the monument to Nakhimov. And only in 1959 a new monument to Nakhimov was opened, while the monument to Lenin was moved to another place. In the collaboration of the artist N. V. Tomsky and the architect A. V. Arefiev with the participation of M. Z. Chesakov, this project was born and implemented.

A pedestal in the form of a truncated pyramid was erected on the existing base, which has been preserved, and a bronze sculpture was installed. Anchors are laid out at the foot of the monument. The front side is decorated with a battle banner and the text of the order to attack enemy troops in the Battle of Sinop. The admiral is depicted in a naval overcoat, on his chest there is a St. George cross. In one hand, a telescope, the other holds a broadsword. The general's gaze is directed to the city, which he defended and for which he gave his life. Behind the back of the admiral is the Sevastopol Bay and the pier. In the first version, the monument was facing the Grafskaya pier and the bay.

On the reverse side there is a memorial plaque, which depicts military attributes and words of glorification of the Russian fleet. The inscription about the years of the admiral's life and the tragic event - the injury of the admiral on the Malakhov Kurgan in 1855 is framed with a wreath of laurel leaves. The lower part of the pedestal is decorated with relief images and scenes from the combat life of Nakhimov. The admiral's conversation with the sailors, the Battle of Sinop, the events on the Fourth Bastion are captured.

The artist N. V. Tomsky was awarded the Gold Medal of the Academy of Arts for the creation of the monument.

The monument has impressive dimensions: the height of the admiral's figure is 5 m 33 cm, and the whole structure is 12 m 50 cm.
