Description of the attraction
Marmaris is located at the junction of the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas on the southwestern coast of Turkey. This pearl of the Aegean coast has long attracted the attention of the ancient peoples - the Carians and Lydians. The founding of the city dates back to the 6th century BC.
In the vicinity of modern Marmaris in the sixteenth century lived Sariana, or, as she was also called, the White Mother - a wise righteous woman who gained great fame thanks to her prophecies.
The tomb of Sariana in Marmaris recalls the distant days of the sixteenth century and the battles of the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent with enemies from the island of Rhodes. According to the legend, the prophecies of the wise Sariana helped the Sultan to gain victories.
Sultan Suleiman I, before going to Rhodes on a military campaign, turned to Sarian in order to find out the outcome of the upcoming battle for the island. When the sultan received a favorable response, he gave the order to besiege Rhodes. According to historians, during the siege of the island, the troops of the Sultan delivered a large number of jugs of milk to the hungry soldiers for breakfast, which was given by the equally famous cow of the fortuneteller. The prophecies of Sariana came true, and the crusaders were driven back to Malta.
The tomb of Sariana is located in the northeast of Marmaris, on the city hill behind the newly built mosque. It was erected in the Ottoman style in memory of the famous fortuneteller.
