Description of the attraction

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Omsk is a striking landmark not only of the city itself, but of the whole of Russia. The temple is located in the very center of Omsk, on Cathedral Square.

The construction of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary began in July 1891. The first stone in its foundation was laid by Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich, who was traveling in Russia at that time. The temple was erected according to the project of the St. Petersburg Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, which was redesigned by E. Virrich. Its architecture displays the best features of Russian architecture, about 30 types of curved bricks of various colors were used in the construction, and the interior and an amazing painted iconostasis glorified the Assumption Cathedral all over the country.

Initially, the monastery was named as the Temple of the Ascension. The cathedral received its modern name after the founding of the Orthodox diocese in 1895. The cathedral has two side chapels - Mary Magdalene and Nikolsky. In September 1898, the cathedral was solemnly consecrated. According to information from 1914, there were two parish schools and a parish school at the church.

In 1902, a garden was laid out around the Assumption Cathedral, which was named Bishops'. In 1915, next to the cathedral, a new square in the Art Nouveau style was erected.

In 1935 the temple was destroyed. For quite a long time, a part of the preserved painted altar wall was located in its place. The former Bishops 'Garden became the Pioneers' Garden.

The revival of the temple began in the first half of the XXI century. In July 2005, the regional government of Omsk decided to recreate the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a historical and cultural monument of the Omsk Irtysh region. After that, construction work began in the temple.

The solemn ceremony of consecration of the new Assumption Cathedral took place on July 15, 2007.
