Description of the attraction

The Azure Window is a must-see sight on the island of Gozo. It is a natural rock with an arch that gradually collapsed and eventually collapsed into the sea.

The Azure Window is located near Cape Duira in the west of the island of Gozo. There is a road directly to the cape, along which regular and tourist buses run, that is, it will be very easy to get to the Azure Window. There are no settlements near Cape Dweira, so you can only meet curious tourists here who climb the nearby rocks, descend along rocky, crumbling paths down, where waves scatter with noise into thousands of splashes, meeting the shore - and all this is just for in order to take good pictures of the Azure Window.

The height of this rock, protruding into the sea, reaches 28 meters. It consists of limestone that is not very durable. Right in the center of this formation, there was an arched opening resembling a window. Experts believe that in just a few years the rock will turn into a small island. In 2012, during a storm, a large piece of rock fell off the underside of the arch, which made walking on the rock, which many tourists like to do, became dangerous. Divers can often be seen near the Azure Window.

This landmark of the island of Gozo has been used as a backdrop in many films and TV series, for example, in the films "Odyssey" and "Game of Thrones".

On March 8, 2017 it became known that the top of the arch collapsed into the sea. The Government of Malta has stressed several times that there was no way to save the Azure Window - neither artificial stone nor new technologies would help. So for several years the Maltese were just waiting for a "sad day". Now the beach looks empty and uncomfortable. One of the popular attractions of Malta is no longer there.
