Description of the attraction

The Mausoleum of Mohammed V is one of the most visited attractions in the city. It is located in the eastern part of Rabat, near the Hasan tower, inside the memorial complex of Sultan Mohammed V, which includes a mosque and a memorial museum.

Mohammed V was the Sultan and King of Morocco, lived from 1909 to 1961. The Sultan lived a very difficult life, he had to endure persecution, live in exile in Madagascar and Corsica, fight for the independence of the state, than he was able to win the love and recognition of his people. It was Mohammed V who became the first king of Morocco after the country was liberated from French rule. And in order to pay great honor to the king, the locals decided to erect a mausoleum of Muhammad V after his death.

The mausoleum was erected in 1971. The author of this project was the Vietnamese architect Vo Toan. The construction of the mausoleum took as long as 10 years. The structure was built in the traditional Moorish style. For the construction was used snow-white marble, delivered from Italy. The green dome is decorated with symbols of royalty. And despite the fact that the mausoleum is new, it fits well into the landscape.

The interior of the mausoleum is especially impressive: a cedar ceiling decorated with carvings and gilding, walls with traditional Moroccan mosaics. A spacious room is located under the dome on the ground floor. In its center there is a white sarcophagus, which everyone can admire. For this, special galleries were built around the hall. In the burial chamber located slightly below, the body of Muhammad V rests. Also in the mausoleum are the tombs of the king's two sons.

To get to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, you need to go through the gate, which is guarded by horse guards dressed in national clothes.
