Theater them. Art. I. Witkiewicz on Khramcówki Street, since its opening in 1985, has become a meeting place for people who really want to communicate with art. The theater is named after the famous Polish writer, classic of Polish literature, brilliant essayist and theater reformer, creator of the concept of "pure form", one of the most profound and mysterious artists of the 20th century, Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, who worked under the pseudonym Witkacy. He began publishing in 1919, and immediately declared himself as a prominent representative of the Polish avant-garde. As the author of more than 30 plays, he wrote about grotesquely deformed reality, and his works are close to the “drama of the absurd”. In his novels, he portrayed the drama of humanity and the collapse of civilization in an abstract utopian form. Also known are his works of a philosophical nature on painting, he himself was a talented portrait painter. Expressing thoughts about the illogism of modern civilization, the writer expressed a premonition of its collapse. Perhaps it was no coincidence that during the invasion of Hitler's troops, he committed suicide.
The repertoire of the theater, proclaiming the cult of "pure form" independent of content, has not accidentally become the concentration of the local intelligentsia, as well as all visiting aesthetes who are not indifferent to the avant-garde direction in theatrical creativity, who want to feel the unique creative atmosphere. The texts of the author of "spiritual sabotage" were included in the Golden Fund of the world theatrical grotesque, and this undoubtedly adds glory to the theater.
The theater has its own rhythm - the beginning of the summer and winter seasons, premieres, the so-called "Carnival at Vitkatsi", as well as the celebration of the writer's birthday in February. All these events attract outstanding artists and theorists from various fields of art to the theater. Regular openings enrich and expand the art collection of the gallery adjacent to the theater. The theater cafe houses the Atanaza Bazakbala stage. This theater is the first professional theater in Zakopane to have a repertoire and a real stage.
