Description of the attraction
Croviana is the agricultural, handicraft and commercial center of Val di Sole. It consists of three districts - Lichiaz, Kroviana and Carbonara. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, this town was a favorite vacation spot for the noble families of Lombardy and Trentino, and today tourism continues to play an important role in its economy.
The three villages that make up the Croviana commune have different origins. Lichiaza was founded in the pre-Roman era, in fact, Crovian - in the time of Ancient Rome, and Carbonara - only in the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, the commune was an important administrative center, where taxes and fees were collected from the entire Val di Sole valley. Then the aristocrats from Trentino began to build their residences here: in the 14th century Pezzena erected a palazzo, and today is considered a symbol of the city, in the 16th century Bucetti and the first national poet of Trentino Cristoforo lived in Crovian, and in the 17th century - Lodrona and the lords of Tunn, who generally came from these places. Later, an air base was located in the town, which was used during the First World War by the Austro-Hungarian troops.
One of the most significant sights of Croviana is the Church of San Giorgio, the first mention of which dates back to 1220. Built in the Gothic style, it is notable for the internal chapel, which was erected in 1611 by order of the barons of Pezzen and painted with frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The old altarpiece with the Madonna and saints dates back to 1579 - it adorns the nave of the church.
Croviana is also known for its luxurious aristocratic palazzo. In addition to the castle, the town also includes Palazzo Angeli with a sundial, Palazzo Taddei and Palazzo Satori with elegant Gothic and Renaissance portals and ornate halls.
On the banks of the Noce River in the town of Fozine there is an old mill, built in the 18th century and restored in 1993 at the initiative of the regional government. Today it houses the offices of Kroviana's numerous volunteer and charitable organizations. The mill can be found on the road that leads to Piazza, one of the most popular villages in the lower Val di Sole.
