Description of the attraction
The People's Palace and Winter Garden in Glasgow, Scotland is a museum and conservatory located in Glasgow Green Park. They were discovered by the Earl of Rosebery in 1898. At that time, the East End of Glasgow was considered a very disadvantaged area of the city, and the opening of the People's Palace was intended to improve the overall environment, to provide a cultural center for residents.
Initially, reading rooms and lounges were located on the first floor of the building, a museum on the second, and an art gallery on the third. But in the 40s of the XX century, the palace became a museum of Glasgow history, telling about the life of the city and its inhabitants. The museum exhibits reflect the changing face of the city over the centuries. The showcases of the museum reproduce the everyday life of an ordinary citizen - a one-room apartment, a trip to a public laundry, an evening of dancing in the famous Barrowland Hall and a boat trip along the Clyde River.
For the centenary, the palace underwent significant reconstruction, the greenhouses were expanded and refurbished. In 2005, the Doulton Fountain, the largest terracotta fountain in the world, created for the International Exhibition in Glasgow in honor of Queen Victoria's golden anniversary, was moved to a new location - in front of the palace.
In the 1980s, the press covered the story of the admission of one of the employees of the People's Palace to the trade union. She was refused admission to the union of state and local employees, since felt that she was not a "white" collar, but a "blue" collar. She was recruited to another union. We are talking about a cat named Smadzh, who was on the staff of the People's Palace and whose job was to catch mice in the palace.
