Description of the attraction
The beautiful Kabbona Park is located in the heart of the Indian city of Bangalore, and is rightfully considered its "lungs". The park was founded in 1864, but officially opened in 1870, at the initiative of Major General Richard Sankey, who at that time was not only the British head of the city, but also the chief engineer of the state of Mysore.
The park was originally named Meads Park in honor of Sir John Mead, the current Commissioner of Mysore, but was almost immediately renamed Cabbona Park, after Sir Mark Cubbon, the longest serving Commissioner. But already in 1927 the park changed its name again. This time it received the name "Sri Chamarajendra Park" in honor of the 25th anniversary of the reign of Sri Krishnaraj Vadeyar in Mysore, who ruled Mysore in the 19th century. It was under him that the foundation of the park was laid. Nevertheless, this place became most famous under the name "Kabbona".
When the park was created, it occupied an area of about 0.4 sq km, but now its territory has expanded to 1.2 sq km. In total, about 96 species of various trees, shrubs and flowers grow in Kabbona, including local ones - tubular cassia, ficus, polyaltia, breadfruit, etc.; From exotic plants in the park there are chestnut-spermum, bamboo, araucaria, soft shinus and others. At the same time, the park is full of flowers and greenery all year round, and the presence in it of an open stage, where an orchestra often plays, and an amazing lotus pond, makes it a truly unique and favorite vacation spot for guests and residents of Bangalore.
The park is not just a garden, it is a whole complex of lush vegetation, magnificent buildings, sculptures and monuments to famous people. It has a large number of both highways (but only small cars are allowed to enter the park) and hiking trails, along which, especially in the morning, visitors like to walk.
Almost in the center of Kabbon stands the magnificent bright red Attara Kacheri building. Today it houses the Supreme Court. The park also houses many other institutions, such as the City Public Library (Seshadri Lier Memorial Hall), the State and Technology Museums, the Aquarium (considered the second largest in India), Venkatappa Art Gallery, State Youth Center Javanica, Cheshire Dyer Memorial Hall, children's amusement park Jawahar Bal Bhavan, etc.
There are also monuments to Queen Victoria (1906), King Edward VII (1919), Major General Sir Mark Kubbon, Sri Chamarajendra Vadeyar (1927) and Sir K. Sheshadri Lieer (1913).
