Ancient monsters, an Altai princess, ancient mysterious books … An adventure movie announcement? Not at all. These are exhibits of the Darwin Museum in Moscow. If you haven’t been there yet, be sure to visit this amazing place. And we will tell you about some of its most interesting exhibits.
Princess
The portrait of the beautiful Altai princess makes an invariably strong impression on visitors. This face is not an artist's invention. The girl's appearance was restored from her remains (mummified). She lived about 2, 5 thousand years ago.
Who was she? It is not known for certain. She was named "Princess" simply because she was buried in luxurious clothes. In general, her burial testifies to the fact that she held a high position in society.
Why did she die? This is also unknown to scientists. It was only possible to establish that she died young and beautiful.
Letters
The exhibits include several letters from the famous scientist Charles Darwin (after whom the museum is named). Moreover, one of these letters was written shortly before his death. At that time, he was no longer able to write and dictated the text to his relative.
The museum also contains letters from Gorky (yes, the same Maxim). Why did they end up there? Everything is very simple: he corresponded with the wife of the director of the museum. At that time, the famous writer was under police surveillance. All his correspondence was strictly controlled. Of course, this left an imprint on the texts. They are laconic.
Books
The museum contains an ancient book - the interpretation of the Bible (more precisely, one of the Gospels). Once it belonged to the descendants of Catherine II. Then it was transferred to the museum. Scientists say that this exhibit contains some secrets, which experts are struggling to solve.
And also in the museum you can see a huge book of the 18th century. Its size is more than half of human height. It tells about animals and plants. Moreover, among them there are those that were generated exclusively by the author's imagination. All of this is supplied with delightful illustrations. They were done by hand!
White squirrel
A stuffed animal of this amazing animal is kept in the museum. Obviously, it suffered from albinism. The snow-white fur of this animal always makes a great impression on visitors. In nature, such individuals are very rare.
Despite the beauty of white fur, albinism is considered an incurable disease. The life span of such animals can be quite short.
Tarbosaurus
The skeleton of this prehistoric monster is another of the museum's gems. Its name consists of 2 Latin words, one of which is translated as "the object of fear". And indeed, having met such a monster, anyone would be horrified! Fortunately, these monsters became extinct before humans appeared on Earth. Otherwise, our species most likely would not have had any chance.
Although scientists have a version that this scary-looking creature actually ate carrion.
The Darwin Museum contains many more interesting exhibits. A visit to this place will surely be a bright, unforgettable experience for you!
