The airport of Barcelona, the capital of the region of Catalonia, in Spain, arrives all tourists who decide to spend their holidays in the resorts of the Costa Brava and Costa Daurada, located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona attracts more fans of excursion tourism: here you can spend an interesting week or two exploring all the local attractions.

But Barcelona also has a sea, which is well known to many travelers who come to the city in summer or in the first half of autumn. To escape from excessive humidity and intense heat is possible only in the waves of the cool and Mediterranean sea. Therefore, having devoted part of the day to a hike in the central quarters, guests of Barcelona go to the comfortable local beaches, which are located away from the tourist paths.

Beach season

The Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Barcelona, despite the fact that there is a port, which receives not only nimble boats and graceful yachts, but also large liners, is clean and transparent. Some beaches have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag.

The swimming season in and around Barcelona starts in May - early June. At this time, the sea is still cool, but vacationers on the beaches, dreaming of a beautiful tan, are already innumerable. Some begin to explore the depths of the sea by swimming.

In summer, the sea water is well warmed up. In August, it generally resembles fresh milk, however, it is much more pleasant to be in it than on land. At the end of summer, the beaches of Barcelona are not crowded, and, mainly, visitors here rest. In August in Spain, almost all local residents go on vacation and disperse in all directions.

The situation on the beaches of the city completely changes in September. With the beginning of the velvet season, the number of vacationers decreases, there are people on the beaches, but there are not so many of them. Parents of young children believe that the temperature of the sea is no longer suitable for swimming, so there will be no companies with babies nearby. Good days are coming for lovers of relative silence.

The beach season in Barcelona lasts until mid-October. In late September and early October, storms with rains can hit the coast. But the water remains warm enough: its temperature is 22 degrees. By November, the sea cools down to 18 degrees.

The most famous beaches in Barcelona

Almost 5 km of coastline is allocated for the beaches in Barcelona. There are many beaches here, they all have their own name. They are united by the presence of sun loungers, toilets, chiringuito beach restaurants, showers, etc. But some of them have their own characteristics.

Some of the most popular beaches in Barcelona include:

  • San Sebastian. It is with him that the chain of city beaches begins. Local residents usually rest here, who are reluctant to travel or walk along the coast in search of a better place to stay;
  • San Mikel. A short beach just outside San Sebastian. It is always lively here, probably because it was chosen by naturists and representatives of sexual minorities;
  • Barceloneta. Clean water and sand and excellent infrastructure make this beach one of the most fashionable in Barcelona;
  • Nova Ikaria. The beach is home to many sports and playgrounds. Tourists with small children usually rest here, so it is noisy, fun, and crowded.

Fun at sea

Barcelona has always been able to surprise its guests. For those who do not come here for the sake of visiting monuments and parks, it offers a different kind of entertainment. Holidays on the beaches of Barcelona will not be boring if you diversify it a little. For example, tourists have a great opportunity to dive with scuba diving. If a person has never dived, but wants to learn, he has a direct road to one of the local diving centers. The Raya's Diving Center enjoys an excellent reputation, where training takes place in two stages: first, a beginner receives the necessary knowledge and, under the supervision of an instructor, dives in a safe pool, and then he is allowed to master the sea depths.

A little more expensive than scuba diving, trips on a snow-white yacht along the coast will cost. In Barcelona, you can rent a yacht with or without a crew and captain, if the client is confident in his abilities and wants to go sailing. A yacht with staff can follow a certain course to a town or simply go along the coast, making stops in especially picturesque places.

There are several light and comfortable kayak rentals on the beaches of Barcelona. Hundreds of people, having rented such a boat, set off on an independent journey along the waves in search of secluded bays and mysterious caves.
