Picturesque Mallorca, or Mallorca, has long attracted tourists with its fashionable beaches, unique nature, calm bays and the presence of many attractions. Every year, the resort areas of the island are visited by millions of visitors who prefer beach holidays in combination with other entertainments. Therefore, almost every Russian tourist knows where Mallorca is.

Where is the island of Mallorca

Mallorca is located in the Mediterranean Sea and is the largest island in the Balearic archipelago. The territory of Mallorca belongs to Spain and ranks first among other islands in terms of area. The administrative center of Palma is home to about 400,000 inhabitants, mainly working in the tourism sector.

In the northwestern part of Mallorca, there are two extensive areas with a mountainous landscape. Mount Puig Major is the highest point of the island and its height reaches 1440 meters. In the vicinity of Puig Major, there is another hill, no less famous among tourists, called Massanella by the locals.

The coastline of Mallorca stretches for 550 kilometers, which allowed the management of the island to create many resort areas, usually located in the area of the bays of Alcudia and Pollença. If you drive to the central part of the island, you can see a plain of considerable size with fertile soils.

Majorca history

The first mentions of settlements on the island date back to the Paleolithic era, as evidenced by the finds found during archaeological excavations. In the future, the territory of the island was under the rule of Carthage, after the fall of which Mallorca became the main place of residence for pirates.

In 123 BC, the island was conquered by the Romans, and from this period in Mallorca, an era of prosperity began. The economic component was based on the export of olives, wine and salt.

Beginning in the 5th century, the island was conquered by the Byzantines, who spread Christianity in Mallorca and erected many temples. Thanks to the Moors, folk crafts developed in Mallorca and the agricultural sector improved.

At the beginning of the 12th century, the island was repeatedly attacked by the Catalans and Almoravids, who ruled in Mallorca for a short time. The year 1347 became fatal in the history of the island, when a plague epidemic completely destroyed the local population, which led to the complete devastation of all settlements. After a long restoration in the 17th century, Mallorca was officially declared part of the Spanish province.

In the middle of the 20th century, the island gradually becomes popular among visitors and turns into one of the most visited tourist centers in Spain. All the forces of the leadership were directed to the development of the tourism sector, so many workers from Africa and South America were invited to Mallorca.
