Beaches and sea
Corfu
Greece is a maritime state. It is washed by three seas: the Aegean, Ionian and Mediterranean. Both on mainland Greece and on numerous islands, all the conditions for a beach holiday have been created: there are numerous hotels with excellent infrastructure, there are well-groomed beaches.
In Greece, there are several areas for a beach pastime:
- Halkidiki peninsula. This is 500 km of the coast, along which hotels, sanatoriums, and boarding houses are built. There are no ancient monuments and elite resorts here. People come here who dream of enjoying the sea and the sun. Young people and families with small children rest here;
- Peloponnese is the south of mainland Greece. Rest here is a great opportunity to combine beach relaxation with a rich excursion program. Local hotels are renowned for their high level of service;
- various Greek islands. The beaches of the island of Santorini are chosen by lovers of active sports, for example, divers. The sand on the beaches is volcanic and has a dark exotic hue. People usually come to Corfu with small children. There is a gentle coastline, no dangerous marine life and insects.
Shopping in Kastoria
Kastoria
You can combine business with pleasure, that is, buy yourself a beautiful fur coat and relax on Lake Orestiada, in Kastoria. The name "Kastoria" comes from the word "castor", that is, "beaver". A few centuries ago, the lake, which at that time was called Kastoria, was home to thousands of beavers with valuable fur. That is why furriers settled in Kastoria, who moved to Greece from Western Europe. By the 19th century, beavers were no longer here, but the fur processing and sewing workshops remained. Moreover, they brought a huge income to their owners. The wealthy merchants built houses in the Balkan style in Kastoria. One of them now houses the Museum of Local Lore.
Many travel agencies still organize shopping tours to Kastoria. Tourists are taken to factories, where they have the opportunity to choose a fur coat for themselves or as a gift.
In general, Greece is the dream of any shopaholic. In any Greek city, it is relatively inexpensive to pick up a new wardrobe and stock up on accessories, including leather bags.
Excursions for every taste
Delphi
You can get acquainted with the richest history and culture of Greece by going to its capital, Athens. There is a unique antique monument - the Acropolis, the upper city, consisting of several buildings: temples, theater, agora. Many architectural monuments, especially of the Byzantine era, are located in the northern capital of Greece - Thessaloniki. On the mainland of the country, it is also worth seeing Delphi with the "navel of the earth" - a kind of reference point for all roads of the ancient world - and an interesting museum where archaeological finds are collected. In Mycenae, tourists visit the burials of the 16th century BC.e., related to the Mycenaean civilization.
From the mainland, catamarans, motor ships and speedboats can reach any of the two thousand Greek islands. The most popular among travelers is Crete, where the Palace of Knossos is located just a few kilometers from Heraklion, where, according to legend, the Minotaur lived.
Pilgrimage tourism
Meteora
On the territory of Greece, there are many Orthodox shrines that attract pilgrims from all over the world. Holy Mount Athos is located on the third, western, promontory of the Chalkidiki peninsula, which juts out deep into the sea. Here you can find about 20 monasteries and dozens of hermitages. This is not a tourist destination. Women are not allowed here. They can only see Mount Athos from the boat during a sea excursion.
But everyone is allowed to enter the monasteries of Meteora. Most of these monasteries, built on the tops of the inaccessible cliffs of Thessaly, appeared in the 14th century. Two centuries earlier, hermit monks who lived in caves settled here. Nowadays, excursions are organized here. Tourists do not have to climb up the rope ladders, as monks did many centuries ago. Convenient approaches have been built for them.
Another holy place for all Orthodox believers is on the island of Corfu (Kerkyra). This is the Cathedral of St. Spyridon, where the relics of this patron saint of all local residents are kept. On major holidays, all pilgrims get scraps of thread from his shoes - for good luck.
