Before setting off on an auto-trip around Montenegrin cities, it makes sense to clarify the parking rules in Montenegro. There are no toll roads in the country, but the payment is due to travel through the Sozina tunnel (highway E80) in the amount of 2.5 euros.

Features of parking in Montenegro

In Montenegro, you can park for free on roadsides, in courtyards, in special parking pockets, in parking lots of villas and hotels, as well as everywhere where traffic rules will not be violated, and there is no sign notifying car owners about paid parking.

Types of paid parking in Montenegro:

  • Paid parking lots along the streets: usually you are allowed to leave cars on them for a maximum of 2 hours. It is necessary to park in lined areas. It is worth noting that in some cities you can come across red (the most expensive), yellow (parking is a little cheaper) and green (the cheapest) parking zones.
  • Paid parking with a barrier: the cost of such parking is 30-50% more expensive than parking along the streets. You can leave the car on them for an unlimited period of time. At the entrance to the parking lot with a barrier, each motorist will see a digital display indicating the number of free parking spaces. The person who pressed the button will “receive” a check from the device, which must be paid to the operator sitting next to the exit gate (those who have lost the exit check will pay a fine of 10-30 euros).

Payment for parking services in Montenegro

You can pay for parking services using a parking meter (it accepts coins from 0, 10 to 2 euros, and after pressing the green button, issues a check indicating the end time of parking) or by sending an SMS from the Montenegrin number (carefully see the instructions under the parking sign). 1 sms at the cost is equal to the price of 1 hour of parking. In response, the car owner will be sent a message, where it will be indicated when the time that was paid will end. A couple of minutes before the time expires, an sms-reminder will come to the number of the autotourist, and he, in turn, can either leave the parking lot or extend the time in the same way.

The cost of a fine for incorrect parking in different Montenegrin cities is different. So, in Herceg Novi it is at least 15 euros, and in Budva - at least 160 euros.

Guests of Herceg Novi will have a lot of problems with parking, since the location of the city is on the slope of the mountain and it is not so easy to find free parking areas. On average, parking in Herceg Novi costs 0, 50-1 euros / 60 minutes, which can only be paid for by sending sms from a Montenegrin number. But there is a way out - it is advisable to stay at the Palmon Bay Hotel & Spa (it has a beach, rooms overlooking the Adriatic Sea, a health and spa center, restaurants of Mediterranean and international cuisine, free parking), Hotel Xanadu (pleases guests with 2 outdoor pools, a bar, a country-style tavern, car rental and free parking on pre-order) or other hotels.

As for the free parking lots in Kotor, they are located in the streets around the Old Town. There is also no charge for parking in the small parking lot next to the northern entrance to the Old Town. In paid parking lots, the payment is made at the rate of 0, 5-1, 20 euros / hour.

Car rental in Montenegro

It will be possible to conclude a car rental agreement (the minimum age of an autotourist is 21-22 years, and the driving experience is 2 years) if you have a national or international driver's license. The deposit amount is 300 euros, and the minimum cost of renting a budget car is 50 euros with insurance / day.
