On the territory of the country, there are 8,400 rivers of various lengths. And at the same time, all the rivers of Azerbaijan flow into the waters of the Araks or Kura.

Alazani River (Alazan)

The Alazani channel runs through the eastern lands of Georgia and the western part of Azerbaijan. Part of the river bed serves as a natural border between the two states. The total length of the channel is 351 kilometers. Moreover, the river is the largest tributary of the Kura.

The source of the Alazani is located on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus (its southern part). The main tributary of the Alazani is the Katekhchay River. In its upper course, it is a classic mountain river with a turbulent current. After its waters come out to the spacious Kakheti Valley, it becomes calmer.

The waters of the river are actively used for irrigation. The Alazani Valley is the main area where grapes are grown for winemaking.

Turianchay River (Tyuryan)

Turianchay is a river, from its source to the place of confluence, completely located on the territory of the country. The channel passes through four regions of Azerbaijan: Gabala; Ujar; Agdash; Zardabsky.

The source of the river is located on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus (southern part). And this is the confluence of two rivers - Karachay and Agrichai. Turianchai flows into the Kuru through an artificially created channel. The total length of the river is 180 kilometers. The upstream is stormy. Basically, the waters of the river are used for irrigation.

Aghstafa river

The river bed passes through the lands of Armenia and Azerbaijan, being the right tributary of the Kura. The total length of the current is 133 kilometers.

The source of the river is geographically located in Armenia (western slope of Tezhler mountain, Pambak ridge). The upper reaches of the Agstafa run along a narrow gorge. The middle and lower parts of the channel run through a wide valley.

The waters of Agstafa are actively used for irrigation of vineyards located along its banks. The major tributaries are: Bldan; Sarnajur; Voskepar; Agdan; Getik. There are three cities on the banks of the river - Dilijan; Ijevan; Kazakh. The river valley once served as a trade route. And today you can see the springs here, decorated by ancient stone-cutters.

Aker River

Aker is a left tributary of the Araks. The river begins on the territory of the Karabakh Highlands, where it is formed by the confluence of two rivers - Gochazsu and Shalva. The upper course of the river makes its way through volcanic rocks, flowing through a deep and narrow gorge. And only in the middle course does the channel expand.

The river is fed by the melting of snows, and the replenishment also occurs due to rains. The main use of the river's waters is irrigation. High water on Aker is observed in May-June.
