Description and proportions of the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis

The national flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis is a standard rectangular cloth of regular shape. Its length and width are related to each other in a 3: 2 ratio. The Saint Kitts and Nevis flag can be used for any purpose on land. It can be raised by both state organizations and private individuals, as well as used by the armed forces of the state. On the water, the banner can be raised only on private ships and ships of the state and merchant fleets. For the needs of the Navy of Saint Kitts and Nevis, a special flag has been developed.

The flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis is divided diagonally into two parts. The diagonal is a wide black stripe bounded above and below by thin yellow stripes. There are two white five-pointed stars on a black background. The black diagonal divides the flag from bottom to top and from left to right into two triangular squares. The part adjacent to the shaft is light green, and the bottom margin is red.

The colors on the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis mean the following: the black field is the African roots of the inhabitants of the islands, the red color is a reminder of the blood spilled by patriots, the greenery personifies the richness of nature and the fertile soil of the country, and yellow is the sunlight. White stars on the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis give residents freedom and hope for peace and prosperity.

History of the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis

For a long time, the state of Saint Kitts and Nevis was the colonial possession of Great Britain. Its flag was a dark blue cloth, in the upper quarter of which, located at the pole, was the British flag. Such flags were typical for all colonial possessions of Great Britain and differed only in the type of coat of arms on their right half.

In 1967, the country received the status of a territory associated with Great Britain and its first flag was a three-color panel, vertically divided into three equal fields. There was green at the shaft, then yellow, and then bright blue. A few months later, a stylized image of a black palm tree on a yellow stripe was added to the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis. So it existed until 1983, when, as a result of gaining independence, a new flag was adopted in the country, which became the state flag and did not change until today.
