Description of the attraction
Suan Pakkad Palace is the first museum in Thailand, created on the basis of the private property of the royal family. It was opened in 1952 by the princess and prince Chumbhotpong. The palace is located on 6 land paradises of Sri Ayudhaya road in Bangkok.
The name Suan Pakkad literally means “Cabbage Leaf”. It houses the finest collection of antiques in all of Bangkok, passed down from generation to generation by the royal family, starting with Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu, son of King Chulalongkorn Rama V and Queen Sukhumal Marashri.
The famous Lacquer Pavilion is located in the central garden of the Suan Pakkad Palace Museum, which displays excellent wall paintings with gold plating, which are 450 years old.
The Chumbhot Pantit Art Center is of the greatest interest on the territory of the palace. Its second and third floor houses a collection of ancient artifacts from the Ban Chiang era, which are about 4,000 years old. There are ceramics, metal tips and jewelry made of precious stones and silver. The collection of finds from the Ban Chiang era has provided historians around the world with a wealth of information about our ancestors and the peculiarities of their lives.
The second floor of the Art Center also houses the Marcy Gallery, which aims to preserve and develop contemporary Thai art. Various exhibitions are exhibited here all year round.
In total, there are 5 central buildings in the traditional Thai style with covered passages between them on the territory of the palace. Of great interest is their teak exterior with the finest hand carvings from the best craftsmen in Siam.
