The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum was founded in 1967, becoming the world's first specialized museum for the collection, preservation and study of carpets. Its first exposition was opened in 1972 in the Juma Mosque on the territory of the ancient fortress of the city of Baku - Icherishahar.

The museum is a treasure trove of Azerbaijani national culture, demonstrating the carpet in close relationship with other types of traditional art of Azerbaijan. Its collection contains about 14,000 carpets, embroidery, clothing, copper-hammered items, jewelry, modern works of glass, wood, felt.

The museum is a scientific center for the study and development of the Azerbaijani carpet. He participated in the organization of a number of major international symposia on the Azerbaijani carpet. The first symposium was held in Baku under the auspices of UNESCO in 1983. Three subsequent symposia were held in 1988, 2003 and 2007, the last of which took place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

In 2008, in accordance with the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the construction of the modern building of the Carpet Museum began, and in August 2014 its new exposition was opened.
