The gallery was founded by Robert Derbyshire in 1889, and in 1958 it became a division of the University of Manchester. It is called "Tate North Gallery" - after the world famous London gallery of modern art. The Whitworth Gallery houses an extensive collection of watercolors and sculpture. Samples of textiles occupy a significant place, because for a long time, the textile industry has been one of the leading places in the city. The halls of the gallery display works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso and an excellent selection of works by Turner.
