Description of the attraction

Lovers and connoisseurs of contemporary art should definitely visit this art gallery located in the park of the same name in southern Manchester.

The gallery was founded by Robert Derbyshire in 1889, and in 1958 it became a division of the University of Manchester. It is called "Tate North Gallery" - after the world famous London gallery of modern art. The Whitworth Gallery houses an extensive collection of watercolors and sculpture. Samples of textiles occupy a significant place, because for a long time, the textile industry has been one of the leading places in the city. The halls of the gallery display works by Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso and an excellent selection of works by Turner.

Since the gallery is part of the University of Manchester, educational programs and programs for working with children and youth take a large place in its activities.

Mainly engaged in contemporary art, Whitworth Gallery strives to be contemporary in all areas. It is the first gallery in the United Kingdom to have its collections available for online viewing.
