Description of the attraction

The Kiev Museum of Medicine was opened in 1973. The place where the museum is located was the anatomical theater of the Taras Shevchenko University. During the excursion, museum visitors get the opportunity to get acquainted with the peculiarities of medicine from various historical eras - Kievan Rus, Zaporozhye Sich, the period of the Crimean War, pre-revolutionary Kiev and World War II.

Through the efforts of the museum staff, unique books, documents and medical equipment of the past were collected here (surgical lamps, pressure measuring devices, devices for cardiography, surgical instruments). At the same time, the equipment of the museum itself is very modern: the interiors are changing, the walls are moving. The figures of patients and doctors exhibited in the museum are as close as possible to the originals and are very similar to living people. Visitors are attracted by the National Museum of Medicine of Ukraine and herbarium of plants, which were previously widely used for the treatment of various diseases, and fragments of chronicles with descriptions of the symptoms of diseases, as well as methods of their treatment. Here you can even find the interior of the bathhouse, since the bathhouse used to play the role of a first-aid post, the interior of an 18th century pharmacy and a simple rural house during a doctor's visit. One of the halls of the museum houses the interior of the operating room of the medical faculty, typical for the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In addition to exhibition activities, the Museum of Medicine is actively involved in publishing. It was through the efforts of the museum staff that the album saw the light, in which were collected works dedicated to medicine and written by domestic artists. It was also the museum that began to publish the historical and medical journal “Agapit” in Ukrainian, Russian and English, in which not only Ukrainian scientists are published, but also medical historians from abroad.
