Kyustendil Art Gallery named after Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora began its work in 1972, it was opened in connection with the ninetieth birthday of this famous Bulgarian painter.

Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora (years of life 1882-1960) is one of the most recognizable artists in Bulgaria. He possessed a special style that is difficult to confuse with the manner of any other artist, distinguished by a unique pattern and very vivid colors.

Dimitrov-Maistora was born in the village of Frolosh (Kyustendil district), studied in the administrative center, during this time he changed several occupations and places of work, until his talent as a painter was noticed. With the help of local residents, Vladimir went to Sofia to an art school, now an academy. The first exhibition in May 1903 by Dimitrov-Maistora, who was working as a court clerk at that time, organized in the halls of the Kyustendil district court. The artist's age at that time was 21 years old. The main percentage of the famous painter's artistic heritage is landscapes and portraits. The central place in the work of Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora is occupied by the theme of nature, he depicted it with wide strokes in close to natural colors.

In 1924, Dimitrov-Maistora moved to the village of Shishkovtsy, where he would spend the next almost thirty years. Here, a cohort of Bulgarian artists was formed around the artist, among whom were such talented personalities as Kiril Tsonev, Nikolai Dyulgerov, Boris Eliseev and others.

The art gallery building on Patriarch Euphemia Street in Kyustendil covers an area of over four thousand square meters and includes seven exhibition halls with natural overhead lighting. The permanent exhibition of the gallery contains more than a hundred works by Dimitrov-Maystor. In addition, works by authors belonging to the Kyustendil school of painting, as well as various Bulgarian and foreign painters are exhibited here.

The gallery is also a popular center of the city's cultural life; concerts, literary and musical meetings, premieres, and various creative competitions are often held here. In addition, you can buy information materials, postcards and catalogs with reproductions of famous works of the artist.
