Description of the attraction
The Boka Kotorska coastline has many beautiful places to see. The Church of the Savior is one of the unique gems among all other Montenegrin attractions. It is important to note that the Savior Church is only part of the church complex located in Topla, not far from Herceg Novi. The entire complex consists of two churches and a building that once served as the residence of the bishop from the famous and respected Njegosi dynasty - Peter II Petrovic. It was here that the bishop was trained in both reading and writing.
The Church of the Savior was built in 1713; nevertheless, its modern appearance owes to the capital reconstruction of 1864.
The iconostasis of the Church of the Savior is the work of Greek master painters of the 19th century. In addition, the church houses a unique collection of icons, including Russian icons, as well as silver crockery and various old books.
Many churches in Montenegro have been restored and built from scratch on the site of previous churches. For example, next to the Church of the Savior there is another church - the Church of St. George. It was erected around the end of the 17th century on the ruins of a once Turkish mosque.
