Description of the attraction
Kalamosca is one of the most popular beaches in Cagliari, located about 4 km from the historic city center. The beach stretches in the middle of a small bay and is bounded by a ridge of rocks from the west and the Sant Elia hill from the east (the hill belongs to the city quarter of San Bartolomeo).
In the immediate vicinity, on the hill of Sant Elia, stands the Torre di Calamosca tower, built in the 17th century as part of a defensive system to protect the Gulf of Cagliari from pirate attacks. The bulk of the tower and the nearby lighthouse dominate Kalamoska Beach. Today the complex is owned by the Italian Navy.
The cylindrical tower Torre di Calamosca was built in 1638, as evidenced by a plaque on the outer wall with the coat of arms of the Spanish king. Its construction was part of the project for the creation of the defensive system of Sardinia, developed by the Spaniards, in which similar towers were built along the entire coast of the island. Torre di Calamosca in the past was called Torre de Armas - Armory, because it was equipped with powerful cannons, or Torre dei Senyali - Signal, for the system through which the tower could communicate with Castello in Cagliari. During the attack of the French fleet in 1793, it was this tower that played a decisive role in the defense of the city. In the mid-19th century, Torre di Calamosca was raised with a cylindrical superstructure, and a lighthouse was built nearby.
In the vicinity of Sant Elia Hill, you can see several natural attractions, first of all - Cape Sella del Diavolo (Devil's Saddle), the small beach of Cala Figuera and high steep cliffs.
