Description of the attraction
One of the main attractions of the city of Donetsk is the botanical garden, which is located on the Makeyevskoe highway, along the Bohodukhovskaya gully. This picturesque corner, due to its area - 262, 2 hectares, ranks first in Europe.
The city's botanical garden was founded in June 1964 as a research institute for the study of applied and fundamental problems of biology of southeastern Ukraine. In 1983, this majestic garden received the status of a monument and a botanical garden of national importance. A year later, he was awarded the UN Silver Medal for his work on nature conservation. In December 2001, the garden's plant collections were awarded the status of "National Treasure of Ukraine".
One of the most important results of the work of this garden is the creation of collections of plants in protected and open ground, which demonstrate the diversity of the flora of different regions of the world.
More than 5 thousand species of exotic plants grow on the territory of the botanical garden, and under the glass there is as much as 1200 sq. m of area, which allows you to organize 5 greenhouses with exotic plants and simulate for them all the conditions of the tropics and subtropics.
The collection of the botanical garden includes about 70 species of plants protected at the international level, up to 90 species that are protected at the regional level, and 97 species of plants listed in the Red Book of Ukraine grow here. Thanks to such a rich collection, the garden blooms from early spring to late autumn.
By its structure, the botanical garden is divided into 4 sections, where different research groups work. These are the department of dendrology and floriculture, the department of flora, the department of mobilization of various plant resources and the department of industrial botany.
Despite all the environmental difficulties of Donbass, thanks to such a large green treasure as a botanical garden, Donetsk is considered one of the well-greened industrial cities of Ukraine.
Donetsk Botanical Garden is open to its visitors from May to November, and for lovers of tropical and subtropical plants, excursions are held here all year round.
