Description of the attraction
The Botanical Garden in Bucharest is considered one of the best in the world in terms of the completeness of collected plants and landscape design. Located near the center of the capital, near the Katroceni Palace.
The Botanical Garden was founded in 1860 on the territory of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacology of the University of Bucharest - for research. The garden continues to traditionally grow medicinal plants for traditional medicine.
Almost a quarter of a century later, due to a lack of space, the Botanical Garden was moved to the western part of the city. There it is located at the present time, occupying an area of 17, 5 hectares. The initiator of the transfer, Romanian botanist Professor Dmitrie Bryndze, is considered the founder of the Botanical Garden, which bears his name. Since that time, active construction of new premises began, and the settlement of greenhouses with plants. In 1891, after the completion of the greenhouse, the garden was opened to visitors.
During the First World War, the occupying German troops were based on the territory of the Botanical Garden, but the Second World War caused significant damage to the collection of plants, as well as to scientific and teaching work. The Botanical Garden received a new impetus for development in 1954, when it became the property of the University in Bucharest.
The modern Botanical Garden is the largest collection of plants, as well as an academic institution whose purpose is to study and preserve the biodiversity of the plant world of the Earth. The garden is structured into zones representing characteristic landscapes from all corners of the world. An appropriate microclimate has been created for subtropical and exotic plants.
There is a botanical museum in the garden - in a building of architecture from the Brinkovianu era (17-18 centuries). The museum has ancient instruments and manuscripts of botanists of the past, products from minerals.
