Description of the attraction

The Temple of Debod stands out so strongly among the general architecture of Madrid, so vividly contrasts with the rest of the buildings, that at the first moment it is difficult to imagine how it could have appeared here. Indeed, the history of the appearance of the Debod temple on one of the streets of the Spanish capital is rather unusual. The fact is that this temple was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government in 1968 as gratitude for helping to build a dam and save Nubian temples from floods.

The temple was built 2,200 years ago and was originally located in southern Egypt, 15 km from the city of Aswan. The construction of the temple began in the 2nd century. BC. during the reign of King Adikhalamani with the construction of a small structure, similar to a chapel. During the Ptolemaic dynasty, the building was expanded and turned into a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis.

The temple was erected in Madrid near the Royal Palace in the Del Ost park. It is completely surrounded by water, just like it was in Egypt, where it was erected. The Debod Temple consists of several structures, the main of which is the chapel, decorated with magnificent relief images. This chapel, which is the oldest part of the temple, has been completely preserved in the form in which it was originally built.

The Debod Temple is one of the few examples of well-preserved Ancient Egyptian architecture that can be seen outside of Egypt.

Located in a picturesque location, the Debod Temple is especially beautiful at night, when its illuminated buildings are reflected in the surrounding clear water.
