Description of the attraction
The Atomium was built in 1958 for the opening of the World Expo and was a symbol of the atomic age and the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. It is a model of an iron molecule 102 meters high and weighing 2,400 tons, consisting of spheres and covered with a steel shell. The six spheres are connected by corridors hidden in pipes and by escalators for visitor access to the interior of the structure. The middle of them has a high-speed elevator leading to the restaurant and the observation deck in the highest ball of the building.
The monument was originally erected during the Cold War as a demonstration of the victory of the achievements of socialism over capitalism. This majestic monument shines with dazzling brilliance, has cultural and educational goals, as evidenced by the exhibition located inside the research work in the field of nuclear energy.
Originally built for only a few days, the Atomium stands to this day, symbolizing the modernity of the country and the endless belief in the peaceful benefits of nuclear energy and a favorable outcome of world history.
From the 102-meter height of the observation platform, a beautiful panoramic view of Brussels opens up. There is a small souvenir shop downstairs.
