In Volgograd there is no metro in the classical sense, but there is a so-called metro. This is a type of public urban transport that successfully combines the features, capabilities and qualities of two at once - the metro and the tram. Thus, a metro tram is a metro (underground) + a tram (surface).

Such a tram system is often called the Volgograd metro, it has a little more than two dozen stations (more precisely, 22). Its underground section is a little more than seven kilometers and six stations, while the ground section has been significantly rebuilt and improved from a conventional tram line. The main goal pursued by the city authorities is to increase the speed of movement around the city and to make sure that the metro tram does not intersect with other types of transport.

Interestingly, Forbes magazine, which has compiled a rating of a dozen of the most interesting tram systems in the world, also included the Volgograd Metro Tram: it ranks fourth in the list. The main reason for this is engineering, because in Volgograd, underground tunnels change places without the traditional crossing in such cases.

In general, the metro tram has a duration of 17.3 km, is equipped with 22 stations, passes through the central and northern parts of the city. Since the specificity of the city is such that it is 50 km long, such a huge section of transport without city traffic jams and congestion is a real boon for the townspeople.

Fare and where to buy tickets

Since the Volgograd metro is a metro tram, tickets for travel can be bought at the ticket office at stations (stops). Today, almost all citizens prefer to buy an electronic transport card. Its price is 100 rubles. You can replenish it in the amount of 50 and 15 thousand rubles.

You can also pay for the fare directly to the conductor in the carriage. In order to save money, you can buy a monthly pass of the State Unitary Enterprise "Metroelectrotrans" for one or several types of transport.

The fare last changed in 2017: for example, on January 1, the Volgograd City Duma set the fare in metro tram at 25 rubles. If you buy a transport card, you can save 2 rubles on each trip.

Electronic transport cards are easy to buy not only at the stations themselves, but also in the network of points of sale of the MUE "Metroelectrotrans".

Metro lines

In fact, the Volgograd metro tram is one line, however, due to engineering features and location, it is divided into three routes:

  • ST from VGTZ to pl. Chekistov. Stations: "Tractor Plant", "Khlebozavod No. 4", "Autocenter (Vodootstoy)", "Ilyich Hospital", "Plant" Barrikady "," Gymnasium No. 14 (School No. 31) "," Stadium "Monolit", "Plant "Krasny Oktyabr", "Street of the 39th Guards Division", "Renaissance Square", "Sports Palace", "Mamayev Kurgan", "TsPKiO", "TRC" Europe-City Mall "," Lenin Square "," Komsomolskaya ", "Pionerskaya", "Chekist Square".
  • ST-2. From VGTZ to Elshanka, extended in 2018. It practically repeats the ST route, but has been extended to two stations - after Pionerskaya, there are Profsoyuznaya, TYuZ, Elshanka.
  • T-1. Stadium ("TRC" Europe City MALL ") - Elshanka. "Lenin Square", "Komsomolskaya", "Pionerskaya", "Profsoyuznaya", "Youth Theater". This route is considered an alternate route. It is used extremely rarely.

Working hours

The high-speed tram (metro) in Volgograd opens doors at the station at different times. So, the station "Lenin Square" opens at 5:37, and others - a little later or earlier, it all depends on the departure time of the first train and its schedule. The same goes for closing: the same station closes its doors at 11:37 pm and not a minute later.

The movement interval is:

  • 4 minutes (route ST) and 9 minutes. (route ST-2) during rush hours.
  • 7 minutes (CT) and 9 minutes (CT-2) the rest of the time.

After 21-00 the interval increases to 20-30 minutes, the last trains depart from the terminal station at 23.30 (accordingly, their time will be adjusted along the route).

History

The history of the metro tram began in a banal way: an ordinary tram line was used in the city's transport system. But in 1976, a number of consultations were held, based on them, the city authorities decided to slightly change the current order of things and build an underground line. The first three stations of the underground part of the metro tram were built by 1984, but this was not the end of it.

The engineers saw the main task of such construction moving away from the city center, where tram lines would create unnecessary load on the roads. Directly underground part - the so-called Volgograd metro - does not cross any other route, so it was called off-street.

The construction was carried out in such a way that subway stations could in the future receive conventional metro trains instead of two-car trams. Since May 2018, new trams have also been operating on the line. We are talking about passenger one-way motor 4-axle cars, which are noticeably different from the usual ones in that they are equipped with a variable floor level (low floor). They were produced at the Ust-Katavskiy plant.

All stations of the high-speed tram, which were opened in 2018, are equipped with a modern video monitoring system.

Peculiarities

The main difference between the Volgograd ground-underground line is in plain sight: in its essence, it united two types of transport, therefore it was called "metrotram". The deepest station sank 14 meters underground - this is "Profsoyuznaya", and the highest one is located 15 meters above the ground - "Pionerskaya". In the underground part of the subway there is … a composter! Passengers must "pay off" the coupon, it amuses children and visitors.
