The metro in the capital of Armenia is relatively young: it was opened only in 1981. Initially, it was conceived as a metro tram - a cross between a tram and a metro. Even now, this metro uses 2- and 3-car trains, which is more like a tram.
The idea of building an underground in Yerevan was first announced at the very beginning of the 70s of the last century. This was prompted by the very active development of the city and the need to provide Yerevan residents with transport that will quickly carry many passengers from one end of the city to the other. However, this city has a rather difficult relief, and the central regions were distinguished in those days by a huge overcrowding of buildings. That is why they decided to move the transport underground.
The construction of the Yerevan metro began in 1972, but construction progressed slowly. In 1981, he was spurred on by a decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU. Research began, engineers offered innovative solutions for those times in order to quickly move underground.
Today the metro in the capital of Armenia is named after Karen Demirchyan. Its total length is 13.4 km. Of the 10 stations, three are ground-based, six are considered deep and one more shallow. The Yerevan metro has only ten stations that are on the same line. From it there is a branch to the “Charbakh” depot, starting at the “Shengavit” station.
Fare and where to buy tickets
The Yerevan metro is considered one of the most accessible in the world. One ride in it costs 100 AMD (about 15 rubles). Travel is paid for with a special card, it is easy to buy it at the ticket office at the metro station. For the convenience of passengers, it is possible to purchase a reusable card, and you can replenish it at the terminals in the station lobbies. These cards are not limited in terms of use, and replenishment is possible within the limits necessary for each passenger. The card costs 500 AMD.
Metro lines
The Yerevan metro has only ten stations that are on the same line. From it there is a branch to the “Charbakh” depot, starting at the “Shengavit” station. Stations from end to end:
- "Friendship".
- "Marshal Baghramyan".
- "Youth".
- "Republic Square".
- "Zoravar Andranik".
- "David of Sasunsky".
- "Factory".
- Shengavit.
- "Garegin Nzhdeh Square".
- "Charbakh".
10 stations, some of which are underground, and some are above-ground - that's the whole metro. However, even so small, it contributes to the transportation of citizens and tourists. Up to 40 thousand people go down to the subway every day.
During peak hours, trains run every five minutes, but the rest of the time, the interval between the two trains is up to 10 minutes - this is enough to cope with the existing passenger traffic in the city.
Working hours
The Yerevan subway lets the first passenger in at 6:00, and the last one at 23:00. This time is standard for all stations. On holidays, the metro runs longer, announcements are made in advance in the metro itself and in the media.
History
When the decision to build a metro was made in the early 70s, it was a kind of challenge. The city has elevations of up to 500 meters, it is located in a seismically hazardous zone, and the districts are scattered far enough from each other. However, there was a person who was confident in the success of the event: Karen Demirchyan. The first secretary of the Communist Party, and later the chairman of the Armenian parliament, he was the driving force that made it possible to open the metro.
The construction was so competent, and the calculations were accurate, that even 7 years after the opening - in 1988. When the country was shaken by a terrible earthquake, the subway and its passengers were not affected. By the way, it was after this natural disaster that the decision was made not to expand the metro.
Each station is a contribution to the overall appearance of the city. The architects did a great job, creating sketches and transferring them in stone to the walls of lobbies and metro platforms. Stones - and these are marble and travertine, granite and gabbro, basalt and others - were brought from different countries: here and Russia, and Ukraine, and Siberia, and Georgia. Not without the Ural and Siberian gems. The decoration of the stations reflects the pages of the history of Armenia, the struggle for its freedom and uniqueness, epic and culture.
Now they are talking about the development of the metro, about the continuation of the existing line and about the opening of another one, but so far these are only plans.
Peculiarities
Among the features of the Yerevan metro are station announcements. Oddly enough, they are served only in Armenian, which confuses many tourists who come to this city.
The new compounds, which have recently been used, are orange - the management of the metro believes that the color should be joyful. Despite the fact that the stations were built on the basis of receiving 5-car trains, at the moment there are only two of them - this is due to both economic reasons and statistics that track the number of passengers.
The metro and its stations are built in such a way that you can get to the key points of the city - the train station, the center, large shopping centers, educational institutions, etc.
