Description of the attraction

The amphitheater on the slope of the Gektepe hill was built in the 4th century BC. at Mavsol and accommodated about 13 thousand spectators. In 1973, after archaeological excavations were carried out on the territory of the amphitheater, it was turned into an open-air museum. Most recently, Turkcell and Ericsson completed a major joint restoration project for this unique structure, begun in 2000 under the leadership of the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archeology. Previous restoration work in 1976-1985 was stopped due to the cessation of funding for the project.

The most visible sign of the new stage of restoration for visitors was the entrance to the tunnel, which was discovered during the previous work, but has not been fully opened and studied until now. This tunnel is believed to lead to an ancient tomb.
